The part that I cannot stop thinking about is how communication affects the relationship between Violet and Titus. How individuals build a relationship in the society. As Titus feels bored to live in world, which is full of consumption, he meets the girl, Violet who resists the Feed, and shows Titus the world without feed. Violet is more like a real person who reads, writes, and has the ability to control herself. Titus is fascinated to Violet because she is unlike others and she has the ability to manipulate the language. From the book, I feel sorrow when the real painful feelings on both Titus and Violet. When Violet starts to lose Feed and memories, and her body parts shut down more often.
During this hard time, Violet sends Titus a list of things that she wants to do with Titus, which is the ideal life she wants to have in the future with Titus. She wishes to grow old with Titus, and build a big family with a dog and grandchildren. In return, Titus’s inability to respond and communicate his feeling of sadness on Violet makes me feel frustrated. Titus stops visiting Violet, and starts dating other girl and denies all the responsibility to Violet. In the beginning, I thought it is his unwillingness to share her pains. Later on, I realize that it is more because of his frustration on expressing his feelings toward death. He seems lost on the feeling of dying Violet. The corporations’ controls over people’s minds and educations make people have no power to get a better understanding of themselves, and eliminate the joy of learning. They try to keep things simple and basic, and each person loses the ability to become a real individual and the right to own privacy. At the same time, they miss the everyday interactions between individuals. Communication connects individuals, and help people mature from a child into a young adult with thoughts and desires, it is a pleasure to share and exchange thoughts though communications.
At the end of the book, Titus goes back to visit Violet, and tells her stories about their relationship though a movie trailer. Titus sees his reflection from Violet’s eyes, and realizes his fears. Again, without the ability to communicate with one another can create a huge block wall between individuals. How can relationships build up? How can we express our caring, love, and responsibility? It will just become a world full numbness and heartlessness.
Our identity may change over time. Before Naomi went to Oaxaca, she was a quiet girl and she seems unlikely to share her talents with other people. From the trip, she gains confidence and build her own identity. Even though Skyla performs her poor mother skill to us and changed Naomi’s life upside down. On the other hand, Skyla’s appearance in the novel has a positive side, Skyla is the main fact/cause that makes Naomi “Becoming Naomi Leon”. The author shows readers that difficult situations such as the feeling of loss, abandonment and hope for young children at their early age can push them become stronger, and appreciate the people who are around them, who love them with all hearts (such as Naomi’s love back to her grandmother and younger brother). Page 220 chapter19, “you must carve so that what is inside can become what it is meant to be. When you are finished, the magic will show itself for what it really is”. From the hardships that Naomi has been faced, she reforms herself and gets more and more mature. This quotes reveals that at the early age of children’s developing years; it takes time to let them become the people who they are now. It is a process to explore and carve own identity. When a child is finally grown up, his/her defined identity become his/her individual final project to perform to the society, and becomes a part of the society.
At the end of the novel, we can see how Naomi’s inside identity changes even the outside world stay unchanged. Naomi’s mother pushes Naomi gets mature faster, from escaping her mother, Naomi learns that running away is not the best solution to solve hardships in our life. It is a way to delay a problem that she has to solve later. In reality, while we are trying to solve problems, we are standing up for ourselves, and we own the power to control what we really want. This novel is great about teaching children to overcome obstacles during the time they grow up. The author reveals an image: an innocent mother, and a mature child. Although Naomi is an innocent child at the beginning, she knows her responsibility to her younger brother, who has a shorter leg than the other. She can perceive things that happened around her, and she worries about things and has a mind of courage. Her mother in contrast, who is irresponsible to Naomi and Owen, she abandoned them and later came back to her kids’ lives to do whatever she wants to do. Naomi in the end, as a young child can understand what she is capable of, Skyla may have enough power to take Naomi’s happiness, but Naomi becomes a strong enough girl who can control her own destiny from her hardships and finally can fight for who she is.
I feel the story is sinister. This makes me wondering that whether ‘Coraline’ should be a kid’s novel. Overall, the language of the book is simple, but makes a kids’ book scary such as the other side of the mirror, the other mother who has buttons for eyes, etc. Those characters make the story creepy that may have negative impacts on children. “The other world” is like a horrible dream that can make kids wake up during the night.
Coraline has similar characteristics to Alice, they are both curious, brave and determined girls who enter an alternate world. I think Coraline looks more like a real explorer, and her caution and skepticism make readers of all ages feel nervous in Coraline’s adventure. At some point, I think Coraline behaves beyond and different from a stereotyped girl character that we normally see, who is easy to get scared and takes less courage than a boy. Coraline’s courage reflects the other interesting side of a female’s bravery once confronting horrific events. In another word, there is no definite boundary between a girl and a boy’s character.
In general, even though “Coraline” is harsh for children to read especially at young ages. However, some qualities that the novel has can also fit in children’s literature well. Compare with other novels that we have read so far, Colraline is a girl who is also bored with the situation she currently stays. She does not feel happy to her real parents because they always ignore her. Throughout exploring, discovering a door to a weird world, she meets the other mother, who treats her well, satisfies her desires, but also tries to lock her freedom. The novel leaves meaningful lessons to educate children through Coraline’s adventure in “the other world”. In the first chapter of the novel: “Can I go into the drawing room?” The drawing room was where the Jones’s kept the expensive (and uncomfortable) furniture Coraline’s grandmother had left them when she died. Coraline wasn’t allowed in there. Nobody went in there. It was only for best”. This passage foreshadows that Coraline will enter the “other” world. The drawing room is a place that Coraline feels curious and wants to enter, which is similar to Alice’s desire to enter the garden. I think this fits a real child’s psychology because whenever something do not belong to or forbidden to children, they always feel more desirable to figure out what is going on in there.
As a child, Coraline’s complaints to her real world reflect in reality there are so many children do not understand their parents’ love because parents are so busy with work, children always want parents to spend most of the time with them. Whenever children do not feel fully satisfied about their life. They want to escape the real world to another alternate universe, or try to seek a better position to situate. But sometimes, it is not easy to obtain everything we want, and our complaints and dissatisfaction may cause worse consequences. After going through all the hardships, children actually can learn lessons from real experiences, and notice that we can not change everything in the world, what we can do is try our best to fit in, love and appreciate what we have in the little world that we currently stay in, and build a stronger character in oneself and become a mature adult.
I think this is an interesting picture that fits what we have discussed in class about “proust and the squid”. This different parts and details create in the image show the differences between writing for children versus adults. Children perceive new things around the world and build them as a part of their brain.
I grew up without reading this novel, I kind of have the feeling of pity because this novel reveals great meanings about nature (death and life) and friendship; what is a real friendship? I understood the real meaning of this term after meeting my best friend from middle school: it is a spirit of giving and sacrificing without complaints. And after all the joys we have shared and all the difficulties we have gone through, a real friend is a part of your family, your shadow and your inner soul. I think this is a classic novel to read. “Charlotte’s Web” is a story about friendship, promises, and love. An ordinary spider can weave miracles for her friend, such as “Some Pig”, “Terrific”, “Radiant”, “Humble”. Those words totally changed Wilbur’s life, and motivated him to win a successful future for himself. When Charlotte finished doing everything for Wilbur, Charlotte ended her lifetime, but remain an immortal friendship with Wilbur. We came to this world alone, and also alone when we face to death. How can we get rid of this loneliness? How can we design our worthy life? I think each individual should create own web with love, and your love will enlighten and motivate others to dream more. Then you are being significant in the world. Life is limited, but is there anything we can last forever? I think in the novel, Charlotte’s egg sac is a symbol of immortal spirit that she left after death. And the attachment between Wilbur and her offspring will never end.
The author creates a story with talking animals to captivate children’s attention and let them know how we should treat our friends and how to keep friends for life during their early ages. In the novel, Charlotte says: “What is a life, anyway? We are born, we live a little while, and we die. A spider’s life cannot help being something of a mess, with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to life up my life a trifle”. The nature of live and death is constant. Different instincts have different life cycles. Like Wilbur was born in spring and Charlotte died in autumn. Life is short, we can choose to be mediocre, but we can also make it significant. Charlotte creates herself a meaningful life with a goal to save Wilbur’s life, her behavior shows that a worthy lifetime is not measured by how long it is, but how much love you give, and how much you left to the people who are still alive. In reality, it is dismal to have a life without love; we should enjoy all the emotional and wonderful moments with friends and live our life with a purpose.
